Our Thoughts Determine Our Reality
This topic deserves more than one post, it is a plague in our society of epic proportions. So I wanted to invite this special lady to share her thoughts with us on Grace For The Journey today. Lets welcome Marissa Bylo today!
May is Mental Health Awareness month. If we are going to talk about mental health, we must address our actual thoughts. Having an unhealthy, dysfunctional thought-life kept me in detrimental patterns of mental health. What we think spills out to every area of our lives- emotions, beliefs, behaviors, actions, and finally our reality.
Speaking affirmations based in truth, specifically God’s truth, is one practice that transformed my thought life. In honor of mental health awareness, during this month I will post different affirmations that have helped me in my own mental health journey. Not just the affirmation, but the root behind it- some lie(s) that messed up your life in the first place.
So let us begin...
"...We take captive every thought..." 2 Corinthians 10:5

Affirmation One: "I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made"
This truth is one that probably hits an uncomfortable cord with a lot of people, especially those who have battled self-hatred, insecurity, and rejection. This affirmation encompasses many facets- identity, self-worth and self-esteem, and the way we view our physical bodies.
That's why the lies that attack this truth, the truth of our identities, are powerful and detrimental to our thought lives thus our realities. Attack the identity and you'll keep someone in their own darkness, in bondage to themselves.
Some of you know these lies well because they have created a LITERAL pathway, a bridge, in your brain-the more you think and dwell on them, the easier it is for these lies to reach you and destroy you.
I know these lies well too.
You are weird.
You are broken.
You are not enough.
You are unworthy.
You are ugly.
You are insignificant.
You are unlovable.
You'll always be this way.
But God has a better report for you today. God has declared these truths over you:
I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
I am made in God's image.
I am created and formed by God.
I am precious.
I am honored.
I am a child of God.
I am God's heir, His inheritance.
I am a friend of God.
I am chosen.
I am royalty.
I am God's special possession.
I am God's handiwork (workmanship, masterpiece)
I am God's dwelling place.
I am a new creation.
This is the truth of who YOU are. Every time a lie comes to attack your identity, speak these truths. Take that thought captive and let these truths set you free. And the more you do it, the weaker the lies become- the pathway they literally made in your brain will be harder for them to traverse.
And then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.
"For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be." Psalm 139: 13-16
"So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God, he created them;
male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27
"Since you are precious and honored in [God's] sight..." Isaiah 43:4
"Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" John 1:12
"So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir." Galatians 4:7
"I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends" John 15:15
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession..." 1 Peter 2:9
"For we are God’s handiwork..." Ephesians 2:10
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God..." 1 Corinthians 6:19
"Your hands made me and formed me..." Psalm 119:73
"But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart " Samuel 16:7
"I put no confidence in the flesh, outward privileges, physical advantages, and external appearances. I put my confidence in Jesus Christ and I glory in Him" Philippians 3:3
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17
