The Reckless Love of God

Merry Christmas to everyone!! Nothing stirs me more than this season of love, giving and celebrating our Saviors birth. I’ve had a song on repeat the last few weeks that has just wrecked me!! The lyrics are so powerful and moving only the heart can comprehend their full significance.

The song is “The Reckless Love of God.” I’ve been overcome with awe and amazement every time I listen to it. It made me think of how it relates to Christmas although it’s not about Christ’s birth per say.  It’s the amazing love God displayed in sending His son to save us. The lyrics say…

Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me. Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life into me. When I was Your foe, still Your love fought for me. When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me. You have been so so kind to me.  There’s no shadow you won’t light up, no mountain You won’t climb up, no wall You won’t kick down, lie You won’t tear down coming after me.

The overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God. It chases me down, fights ‘till I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine. I couldn’t earn it, don’t deserve it, still You gave Yourself away. Oh the overwhelming, never-ending love of God.”

Before we were born, or knew we would need a Savior, when we were living for our own pleasure, wasting our virtue and slowly killing our bodies He sent our answer, before we even asked the question. His own Son in human form came to die a gruesome death for ME.  We can’t even comprehend that kind of love.

A love that would go to any extreme to get to me, how can we fathom it?  But just because our minds can’t understand it, it makes no difference. He did it anyway. The artist,  Cory Asbury, who wrote this song, gives a short explanation of it. He states, “Gods’ love is reckless in the sense He is utterly unconcerned with the consequences of His actions in regard to His own safety, comfort and well being. His love is not crafty or slick not cunning or shrewd, in fact all things considered it’s quite childlike and sometimes downright ridiculous.

His love bankrupted heaven for you and me. His love doesn’t consider Himself first, isn’t selfish or self-serving. He doesn’t wonder what He will gain or lose by putting Himself on the line. He simply puts Himself out there on the off chance you and I will give Him that love in return. Love leaves the 99 to go after the 1 every time!

Too many practical adults consider that a foolish concept.  What if He loses the 99 going after the 1? Finding that one will always be of utmost importance. His love isn’t cautious. It’s a love that sent His own son to die on a cross. There is no plan B with the love of God.

He gives His love so completely, so preposterously that if refused we would think it irreparably broken.  Yet He gives Himself away again and again and again. Make no mistake, our sin does pain His heart and 70x7 is a lot of times to get your heart broken. Yet He opens up and allows us back in time and time again.

His love saw you when you hated Him and when all logic said they’d reject Me. But said I’ll lay My life on the line as long as I get their hearts. He’s a Father who NEVER gives up…..

Wow! His description of God’s love is breathtaking. I pray in this season that we take some time to consider His love for us, and respond to it. It’s not about putting presents under a tree but about God putting His son on a tree for YOU and ME.
